Workshop Findings

Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent conference workshops. They provide valuable insights into our community needs and help drive future strategy and decision-making of the Thrive Together programme.

We have analysed all of the comments collated during the day (after the hard task of deciphering everyone's writing), and have summarised the discussions across both workshops about collaboration, the benefits and actions.

Some interesting common themes appeared repeatedly from all the discussions.

  • Directory of Contacts
  • Clear Communication
  • Sharing Information
  • Digital Resources
  • Savings of Time and Resources
  • Sharing Knowledge

You can find more details information about each workshop below:

Workshop 1 - Collaboration

Designed to bring the diverse groups attending together to explore how collaboration is working across our region, share ideas and discuss what would make it more effective. With budget pressures across the sector, working together collaboratively is becoming even more important.

Attendees were asked:

  • What does good collaboration look like, giving examples of who you collaborated with, what was the goal, what made it effective, and what resources were saved or enhanced.

Existing collaboration was discussed with numerous positive examples given from across the room.

Collaboration is happening between local charities, national charities, NHS departments, local authorities, NHS Ops and mental health teams, prison service, social work teams, primary care networks, voluntary services, housing associations, drop-ins, police service, ambulance service, operational bases and regimental associations.

Specific collaboration was mentioned:

  • Fighting with Pride working with Age UK to advice on benefits available to over 50s

  • Walking with the Wounded working with the NHS

  • Norwich City Council bringing services together to support homeless veterans

  • Veterans Central collaborated with Walking with the Wounded and RBL Fakenham - sponsoring a room to save costs

  • If you had a magic wand, what would make collaboration easier or more effective, giving examples such as what gets in the way of collaboration, what would make it easier, what support or tools would help, and how can the Thrive Together programme help.

Several common barriers were identified:

  • Funding competition between charities
  • Heavy caseloads and limited time
  • GDPR and data sharing fears
  • Lack of awareness of who's doing what
  • Fragmented systems
  • No central referral point
  • Attitudes, personalities and egos
  • Protectionism
  • Red Tape
  • Geography
  • Poor communication

Workshop 2 - Co-creating a digital platform

Following the 2024 consultation of the professional network, feedback highlighted the need for a regional platform where those working to support veterans can share knowledge, sector information and events.

An Armed Forces Network already exists in the South East, and one option available is to join and expand this network, along with other regions of Thrive Together. Alternatively, we can look to develop our own platform.

The objectives of the platform are:

  • A common Thrive Together approach across all regions

  • A sustainable network

  • Streamlined sharing of information

  • Support collaboration and shared learnings

  • Key areas to include:

    • Learning System

    • News & Updates

    • Resources and Recordings

    • Events and Newsletters

The platform will be managed by a membership and sign-up system.

Discussions were held on the following 4 topics:

Most attendees supported the idea of the system, especially if it is managed well and provides real value. The most frequently mentioned benefits included:

  • Access to a directory of contacts
  • Better communication across services
  • Learning opportunities
  • Shared resources such as factsheets and training materials.

Some valid concerns were also mentioned:

  • Ownership of the system and the information

  • Ensuring no harmful or inaccurate information is posted

  • Sustainability without funding for the system

Next Steps:

  • Follow-up with our regional leads
  • Explore Options with the current Armed Forces Network
  • Updates circulated
  • Roll out later in 2025
